Learn how to carve your own spoon using hand tools.
I’d love to welcome you into my light-filled studio to learn how to carve a coffee scoop from reclaimed native New Zealand timber.
In this one-day class (limited to six people), I’ll teach you my approach to spoon carving using hardwood rather than greenwood, which is more commonly used. We’ll cover the properties of wood and how to work with grain direction, before carving your spoon using a blade and hook knife.
Your spoon will be sanded, finished with a New Zealand-made beeswax oil, and ready to take home and use.
All skill levels are welcome.
Over the past five years I’ve taught more than 350 people, aged 10–80, how to carve a spoon. No prior experience is needed — anyone can do this with guidance.

What to Expect
There will be a 30-minute lunch break. Ozone Coffee is across the road, Farro is a 30-second walk away, and Woolworths is nearby. You’re also welcome to bring your own lunch. There is a small kitchenette with a sink, but no facilities for heating food.
The workshop is located in a large warehouse-style building. Depending on the weather, it may be cool or warm — please dress appropriately in clothing you don’t mind getting dusty, and wear closed-toe shoes.
Carving requires some hand strength. Rubber thimbles are provided. If you’d like additional protection, you’re welcome to bring gardening gloves.
This is a shared workshop environment. Other wood and metal makers may be working during the day — it’s a lively, creative space full of the sounds of making.

Date changes are permitted up to 14 days before the class.
Within 14 days of the class date, bookings are non-transferable and non-refundable.
Refunds will only be issued if the workshop is cancelled by Courtney Petley.
