The 100 Piece Series

Typically when I have an idea, it is viewed as being a complete and perfect collection, where the development process is hidden, and only the refined product is presented to my audience. 

The concept of “making 100 pieces of one idea” is interesting to me. In some ways, this feels like a meditation where I repeat the mantra over and over again. How does the evolution of the process refine the idea. If the 100 pieces were then split into three phases, how does each piece, and each phase inform the next. With trial and error, how does an open mind move an idea along, especially when imperfection can be visible in the finished piece.

In Phase 1 of The 100 Piece Series, I have made 34 unique spoons, using off cuts to describe a unique shape and size, hand drawing the spoon bowls to fit, and adding decorative inserts.

For Phase 2, the pieces are presented in the order they were made. The original idea was to explore multiple forms, which ultimately evolved into five wide-tooth combs. However, I’ve come to realise that the 100-piece series is best rooted in the spoon form, with its simplicity allowing for continued experimentation and refinement.

In this phase, I returned to a more classic shape, seeking to eliminate the complexity of creating a new, unique form with each piece. Instead, the focus shifted to experimenting with the inserts, which has become the core of the collection.

Phase 3, the final installation of The 100 Piece Series shifts into mirrors — a way of placing the work on the wall, where light, texture, and time become part of the piece. This completes the series

The pieces have been priced according to their number in the collection, from $100, $101, $102… to $200. A further experimentation by playing with the value system.
