Learn to Carve a Spiral by Hand
Join me in my Grey Lynn studio for a three-hour carving class. In this class, you’ll learn the fundamentals of carving wood by hand, exploring grain direction, symmetry and carving technique as you transform a pre-cut timber blank into a carved sphere.
What You'll Learn
Working with a carving knife, you’ll learn how to remove material safely and efficiently, read the grain direction, and gradually refine the form using controlled carving cuts.
What you'll Make
You’ll begin with a pre-cut timber blank before gradually carving away the corners as the sphere begins to emerge.
Throughout the evening you’ll refine the shape before applying a natural oil finish to enhance the timber’s grain.
You can choose to preserve the crisp carved facets or sand the surface smooth before taking your piece home.
Who Can Attend
All skill levels welcome. No experience needed.
This class is relaxed and exploratory — it’s about learning a new skill and enjoying the process, rather than achieving a perfect outcome.
