Introducing the Stool in Tōtara, a beautifully geometric piece that is as versatile as it is striking. This Stool was handcrafted using the last piece of this incredibly unique Tōtara, a long 100x100square length that I have had multiples of for years, now down to the final piece (unfortunately I can't get anymore), I wanted to do something special with it that would truely celebrate its magnificent grain.
The Stool celebrates the natural beauty of timber, the simple and clean shape shows off the unique grain, seeing the timber for what is is from all angles, long and end grain is a true delight and an insight to a precious and rare resource. The grain catches the light beautiful and will change and reflect differently as sun moves through the day. This piece is especially sparkly, the Tōtara reflects like silk along the long grain, and is deep and rich at the end grain.
Designed with symmetry in mind, the stool features a 210mm square seat and 70mm square legs, creating an aesthetically balanced form that feels soothing and grounded. The legs are attached using a hand carved mortise and tenon joint so it is extremely sturdy. The seat has been made up of three pieces of timber, giving nice symmetry as the three pieces are the same width as the legs, which are a solid, single piece. The step at the base of the leg is a small 4mm deep piece of contrasting native timber.
At 200mm tall, it’s an ideal height for a variety of uses—a sturdy footstool, a unique display pedestal, or a functional side table. Each leg’s proportions echo the seat’s depth, offering a sense of cohesion and subtle elegance that will elevate any room. With its clean lines and natural tones, this piece is perfect for those who appreciate functional art and timeless design.

About
Goods are made using both responsibly sourced, and reclaimed native New Zealand timbers, and off-cuts.
Any and all impurities, cracks, knots, or nail holes in the timber are a sign of the natural material it is, and it's previous use. I consider these markings a thing of beauty, and I have preserved and included these purposely to celebrate and honour the history, age, and natural beauty of the timber.
The final image is for scale reference only, the timber in this image is Swamp Kauri.
Each item is individually hand made, and is completely unique in form and grain. The piece you buy is one of a kind.
